Able to stay within three points, 11-8, of speedy Alamosa through eight minutes, the Bayfield girls were unable to recover after the visiting Mean Moose went on a 16-2 run beginning the second quarter. Alamosa scored 27 points to Bayfield's eight in the quarter, cruising to a 63-30 victory Tuesday evening, Jan. 22.
Suffering their first loss in five outings, the Wolverines got 11 points - two on a buzzer-beating 16-foot bank shot ending the first half - from sophomore guard Brooke Merchant. She fouled out against AHS with 1:54 remaining. Sophomore center Macee Shultz scored 10 points while also altering at least five enemy shots. Senior guard Tymbree Florian chipped in six points and sophomore guard/forward Cayanne Carlson three as Bayfield (5-5, 2-1 3A Intermountain) trailed 38-16 at intermission and 48-26 entering the fourth quarter.
Alamosa sophomore guard Emily Lavier paced all players with her 15 points, nine coming via three first-half three-pointers. One of her treys put the Moose (9-4, 3-1) up 7-5 with 2:44 left in the first quarter, giving the guests their first lead in the contest and erasing what ended up being BHS' last lead.
Junior guard Lily Lavier booked 13 points for AHS and senior center/forward Sylvie Caton also hit double figures with her 10.
On Jan. 17, the Wolverines scored a 57-36 home win against Monte Vista. Carlson logged a game-best 14 that victory, while Merchant netted 11 points.
Bayfield will next travel to third-ranked Pagosa Springs (10-2, 4-0) on Friday evening, then continue their eastward haul out to Alamosa for a 2:30 p.m. start Saturday.
