Is no one else in Durango infuriated by the following local problems: The proposed $1 million expenditure for artificial turf for the Durango High School football field. We don't have enough money to pay our teachers, but we're going to spend $1 million on artificial turf that has been proved to cause more injuries than natural grass and at a price that shouldn't even be considered in these difficult economic times. Isn't our children's education more important than a football field?
I am also writing about the $35 million that has been spent on a bridge that goes nowhere. Shouldn't the road have been built before the bridge? Now they're talking about dismantling it and moving it elsewhere. How much is that going to cost? If we have enough excess funds to waste $35 million or more, how about a tax refund for the taxpayers of La Plata County?
Why are we even considering expanding the dog park? We live in an area where there are plenty of open spaces for our dogs to walk and run - why not give that money to the Humane Society? Instead we need to send the animals off to Boulder where they are more likely to find homes.
It's time to speak up and say enough is enough! This is our money our officials are spending, and I'd say we're not getting our money's worth.
